#HongKongHikingOutdoors
Tai Tung Shan is a popular spot in Hong Kong to admire silvergrass. Every autumn, the entire hillside is covered with golden silvergrass, creating a dreamy landscape. Before hiking, it is recommended to bring enough water, light snacks, sunscreen, and warm clothing, as the wind on the mountain can be strong and the weather changes quickly.
Starting Point: Ngong Ping Departure
To reach Tai Tung Shan, you can start from Ngong Ping and follow Section 3 of the Phoenix Trail. Enjoy the magnificent mountain views along the way, passing through Pok Kong Au, which is a great place to rest and replenish. Then continue towards the summit of Tai Tung Shan. Although the path is somewhat steep, the beautiful scenery makes it worthwhile.
Scenery and Photo Spots Along the Way
As you ascend, you get an unobstructed view of the South China Sea and the various islands around Lantau Island. Near the summit, vast fields of golden silvergrass come into view, swaying poetically in the wind—an excellent spot for photography. Many people capture the sunset here, where the setting sun casts a warm golden glow over the silvergrass, bathing the entire hillside in a cozy light.
Arriving at the Summit of Tai Tung Shan
One of the iconic sights of Tai Tung Shan is the "Tai Tung Shan Stone Houses." These abandoned stone houses are full of historical charm and add a touch of mystery to the hike. You can take a short break here to enjoy the expansive views from the summit and breathe in the fresh autumn air.
You can choose to return the same way or descend via Yi Tung Shan and the South Lantau Country Park to explore more trails. The entire journey is moderately challenging, offering both a rewarding challenge and an immersion in the natural beauty of autumn. Whether you love photography or simply want to relax, the silvergrass of Tai Tung Shan is definitely worth a visit!
