This time I boarded the "Gu Lang Yu" route from Hong Kong and wanted to share my experience with you - writing in the most plain mood, not exaggerating, just remembering some details.
Before departure & boarding
Board the ship from Hong Kong's Kai Tak Pier early in the morning and follow the shipping company's notice to get your passport and boarding documents to cross the border. The ship arranged for luggage to be checked into the room, which was very convenient. The Gulangyu is affiliated to Star Travel Ocean Cruises, with a total tonnage of about 70,000 tons, a length of about 261 meters, 13 decks, and a passenger capacity of about 1,700.
The route is Hong Kong → Halong Bay in Vietnam → True Beauty Harbor → back to Hong Kong again, a five-night, six-day route.
Impressions of life on a ship
The room space is quite spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sea. Facilities are good with gym, theater, shopping shops, spa, spa, bar and more. There are buffet, main restaurant, specialty restaurant every day, a mix of Chinese and Western food, and the taste is average.
Every day a “daily newspaper” lists the activities: there are dance lessons, concerts, film screenings, craft workshops, bar night performances, etc. The evening is the busiest.
One night on the deck watching the stars with the gentle sea breeze was chill.
Shore itinerary: Halong Bay + True Beauty Harbor
When you arrive at Halong Bay join the shore excursion arranged by the ship, you can take a boat tour of the sea karst landscape. True Beauty Harbor is not long, mostly simple walks and souvenirs.
In short, this route from Hong Kong, the Gu Lang Yu, is a relaxing vacation: time at sea + short shore expedition combined. It would be a good choice if you want to fly away from the hustle and bustle of the city, quietly look at the sea, and enjoy a slow-paced journey.
