Buddhist Monastery lost high in mountains

Diskit Gompa in Nubra Valley turned out to be one of those quietly perfect monastery visits. For just ₹20 per person, we entered this peaceful hilltop complex where you could spend hours just soaking in the valley views. The monastery itself has that wonderful weathered charm of old Ladakhi temples, with colorful prayer wheels and faded murals.

From the gompa's vantage point, you get a clear view of the massive Maitreya Buddha statue standing guard over the valley below - though the real magic was in the monastery's own atmosphere. We practically had the place to ourselves, with only the sound of fluttering prayer flags breaking the silence. The panorama of Nubra Valley from here is breathtaking - all patchwork fields and winding river channels framed by snow peaks.

The ride down from Khardung La Pass to get here was half the adventure - one stunning mountain vista after another. But Diskit Gompa itself was worth the journey. No crowds, no rush - just authentic Ladakhi Buddhist calm. Bring warm layers though - that hilltop wind cuts right through you! A perfect peaceful stop between Nubra Valley's sand dunes and other attractions.

Pro tip: The small cafe near the parking area serves surprisingly good butter tea to warm up after exploring.
