The Okinawa Himeyuri Peace Memorial Museum tells the stories of the students who died during World War II. From the moment I entered, a sense of tranquility permeated the museum. The interior, bathed in soothing lighting and filled with historical documents, photographs, and mementos, left me deeply moved.
As I slowly explored the exhibition, I was able to personally experience the pain and courage endured by the students and teachers of that time. Models and video footage made it easier to understand, and as I walked, imagining the situations they faced, I became even more deeply aware of the preciousness of peace. The memorial space in the center of the museum particularly inspired me to pause and reflect.
Outside, the well-maintained garden provided a pleasant place to sit on a bench and enjoy the breeze, reflecting. Reflecting on the meaning of peace and gazing at the buildings and gardens, which harmonize with the surrounding landscape, brought a sense of calm and composure.
On a downside, it can be difficult to enjoy the exhibition quietly during busy times. The exhibition explanations are primarily in Japanese, so it's much easier to understand them when accompanied by English guides. Still, thanks to its overall calm and solemn atmosphere, it was a meaningful place worth visiting during your Okinawa trip.
