Ho Kau Kee Hainanese Tea Shop, located in Kuala Lumpur's Kwai Tsai, is a well-known establishment on Petaling Street in Chinatown. Founded in 1956, it boasts a history of nearly seven decades. Its retro decor, filled with artifacts from the past, creates a nostalgic Nanyang atmosphere.
Ho Kau Kee Tea House offers a wide variety of signature dishes, including coconut-scented nasi lemak, Hokkien fried noodles imbued with curry sauce, soft-boiled eggs served with soy sauce and pepper, and kaya butter toast. On weekends and holidays, they also serve traditional taro cakes. For drinks, Hainanese tea and Hainanese coffee are must-try options. Hainanese tea is a blend of coffee and tea, offering a rich and smooth flavor. With an average cost of around RM20 to RM30 per person, it's a great value. Its unique flavor and nostalgic atmosphere attract many tourists who come to enjoy the Nanyang-style delicacies and check out the photo ops.
Even before the restaurant opened at 7:30 AM, people were already waiting outside to get a table, and it was even harder to get a table during lunch. Luckily, I was staying at the hotel across the street during my September visit to Kuala Lumpur, so I was able to get a table first for breakfast. 😋
