Exploring Kyoto’s Most Photogenic Streets & Temples: The Ultimate One-Day Walking Route 🌸📸
If you love history, hidden corners, and that classic Kyoto vibe, this stroll through Higashiyama has you covered. Start at Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka (2-chome, Masuya-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto 605-0826) — two preserved pedestrian lanes lined with teahouses, sweets shops, and dreamy souvenir finds. Get there early to snap crowd-free photos; both streets are open all day, year-round.
Saunter over to Nineizaka (〒605-0826 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, Masuyacho, 清水2丁目), also open all day. Pro tip: don’t rush! Peeking down side alleys brimming with lanterns and kimono-clad locals is half the magic.
Next, spot the iconic five-story Hōkan-ji Temple/Yasaka Pagoda (〒605-0862 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, 清水八坂上町388, open 10:00–15:00). Even if you don’t go inside, the streets leading up to it serve major postcard energy. For panoramic city views, continue up Kiyomizuzaka (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, open all day). It’s a gentle hike with snack stops along the path.
Swing by Yasaka Kōshin-dō Temple (390 Kinencho, Higashiyama Ward, open 09:00–17:00) — a tiny, colorful gem famous for its “kukurizaru” good-luck charms. A few minutes away is atmospheric Ishibe Alley: super tranquil and full of Edo-period vibes, perfect for golden hour photos. End your walk at Kōdai-ji Temple, a peaceful temple complex with beautiful gardens.
Getting Around: This route is super walkable, but wear comfy shoes — those cobblestones are no joke.
Food: Try yatsuhashi (cinnamon-scented treats) or stop for matcha soft serve at a street vendor.
Tip: Cash is king in Kyoto. Many small shops still don’t accept cards.
