Central Spain Tour ~ Madrid (Region)
The Reina Sofia National Art Center opened to the public in 1990, showcasing a collection of Spanish and international art treasures spanning from the late 19th century to the present day. Two years later, Pablo Picasso's "Guernica" was added to the collection, playing a pivotal role in the museum's discussions and activities.
The museum is housed in a historic hospital building designed by architect Francesco Sabatini, dating back to the late 18th century. As the collection grew, the museum required expansion, and in 2005, a new building designed by Jean Nouvel was completed.
In recent years, the museum's 25,000-piece collection has been reorganized to create a pathway exploring its most notable features, such as Surrealism, the 1937 Republican Pavilion, and Spanish Informalism in the 1950s within an international context. Currently, exhibitions are divided into four main sections: "The Drunken Boat: Eclecticism, Institutionalism, and Resistance in the 1980s"; "Assembly 92: Can History Be Reversed?"; "Avant-Garde Territories: Cities, Architecture, and Magazines"; and "Plaza Cerrada" (Spanish Art 1939-1953).
The Reina Sofia Art Center also serves as a space for research, experimentation, and reflection, offering a rich array of temporary exhibitions and public activities.
