Phra That Doi Tung
.. Located at km. 17.5 of Highway No. 1149, it enshrines the left cervical bone (collarbone) of the Lord Buddha and is the chedi for people born in the Year of the Pig.
.. It is the most famous chedi in Chiang Rai Province, which is ancient, beautiful, and located on a mountaintop about 2,000 meters above sea level.
.. Phra That Doi Tung is a pair of golden chedis in the shape of a small bell-shaped castle on a square base covered with terracotta tiles. It is considered the chedi for the Year of the Pig, which in Lanna belief is symbolized by an elephant (Kunchara).
.. The legend of Phra That Doi Tung states that this is the first chedi in the Lanna Kingdom that enshrines the left cervical bone (collarbone) that King Achutarat brought from India. Later, Kruba Srivichai restored it. And the current pagoda was built to cover the old pagoda.
.. There is also a story that in the past, a centipede flag (Tung) that was as long as a thousand wa was planted on the mountaintop. If the tip of the flag fell somewhere, it would be used as the location of the pagoda. This is probably the origin of the name of Phra That Doi Tung.
