🐖 🐖 Wat Phra Maha Chinnathat Chao (Doi Tung), or commonly known as Wat Phra That Doi Tung, is located in the area known as the chest of Doi Nang Non, Tambon Huai Khrai, Amphoe Mae Sai, Chiang Rai Province, which is the home of the hill tribe people. Doi Tung is approximately 46 km from Mueang Chiang Rai District. It enshrines the left collarbone of the Lord Buddha, brought from Madhya Pradesh. This was the first time that Sri Lankan Buddhism was established in Lanna Thai. When the stupa to enshrine the relics was built, a large centipede flag (called “Tung” in local language) as long as a thousand wa was planted on the top of the mountain. If the tip of the flag flies to a certain city, that flag will be the base of the stupa. Therefore, the mountain where the first pagoda of Lanna Thai is enshrined is called Doi Tung. Phra That Doi Tung is an important religious site. During the Phra That Doi Tung worship festival on the full moon day of the third lunar month, there are Buddhists from both Thailand and neighboring countries such as the Chiang Tung people in Shan State. Myanmar, Luang Prabang, Vientiane people travel to worship every year. Doi Tung Pagoda is considered the pagoda of the year of birth for those born in the year of the pig, which is popularly worshipped for good fortune. Tourists can see Doi Tung Pagoda from a distance because Doi Tung Pagoda is located about two thousand meters above sea level.
🐖🐖 Importantly, it is also the pagoda of the year of birth for the year of the pig. 🐖🐖
