Matsumoto City Day Trip: From Castle Strolls to Artistic Old Streets

Located in Nagano Prefecture, Matsumoto City is a charming town that blends history and art. This one-day itinerary offers a relaxed exploration of Matsumoto, from famous landmarks to local shops, allowing you to experience its elegance and tranquility.

Morning: Matsumoto Castle → Yohashira Shrine
Start your day at Matsumoto Castle, known as the "Black Castle." This national treasure dates back to the 16th century and is Japan's oldest surviving five-tiered, six-story castle tower. Climb to the top for breathtaking views of the city and the Northern Alps!

Just a short walk away is Yohashira Shrine, often called the "Matchmaking Shrine." Take a moment to pray for good fortune and blessings.

Noon: Nakamachi Street Food Stroll
Stroll along Nakamachi Street, a historic area with Edo-style white-walled storehouses. Here, you'll find numerous cafes and boutique shops. I chose a gallery-restaurant hybrid for lunch, enjoying refreshing Shinshu soba noodles.

Afternoon: Nawate Street Shopping → Matsumoto City Art Museum
Next, head to Nawate Street, a retro-style shopping street with a whimsical frog mascot. The street is filled with fun designs and photo-worthy spots.

End your day at Matsumoto City Art Museum, marked by Yayoi Kusama's iconic "Polka Dot Pumpkin." The museum's permanent exhibits are brimming with modern art energy—a must-visit for art enthusiasts!

This one-day Matsumoto trip combines the charm of an ancient castle with artistic vibes, making it one of my favorite relaxed yet enriching walking tours.
