Walking into the Nanzhuang Osmanthus Garden is like stepping into a mountain town living room surrounded by osmanthus and woodcraft—outside, the old street and suspension bridge, inside, osmanthus wine, handmade crafts, and the shadows of dried branches, naturally slowing your pace.
My scene: It felt like walking into a "small mountain town art gallery" enveloped in the fragrance of osmanthus.
I was immediately drawn to the tree in the corner, seemingly "growing inside the house." Its trunk climbed up the wall, its dried branches forming a soft wall. Osmanthus wine, tea bags, wood carvings, and postcards were placed on wooden shelves and small shelves. Light filtered in through the window panes, illuminating brown paper bags and glass jars with a gentle glow.
I paused for a long time at the display table: the colors of the town suddenly took on a flavor—the sweet fragrance of flowers, the warmth of wood, the slowness of time. The staff were quiet, offering tasting spoons and hot tea only when requested. This "treating travelers as family" rhythm is uniquely Nanzhuang.

Background Story and Development History | From "Osmanthus Alley" to "Osmanthus Garden"
• The Old Street's Osmanthus DNA: Nanzhuang Old Street is famous for its osmanthus wine and Hakka dim sum, and Osmanthus Alley is a must-see for travelers. The laundry pit, the old post office, and the suspension bridge connect everyday life with history. Official tourist information clearly states that Osmanthus Alley and the surrounding cultural and scenic landmarks are one of Nanzhuang's hallmarks.
• "Why is it called Osmanthus Alley?" The local story suggests that the alley's name comes from the osmanthus flowers that grew along its banks and the community it fostered. Later, businesses developed osmanthus products, giving rise to today's "Osmanthus Economy." This richly oral narrative is repeatedly mentioned in numerous local travel articles and guides.
• The Role of Osmanthus Garden: The Nanzhuang Osmanthus Garden Village Hall combines a restaurant, shop, woodcraft, and DIY activities into a single courtyard. It specializes in promoting osmanthus wine and its merchandise, and also serves local cuisine. It serves as a base for tourists to stock up and find items while walking from the Old Street to the Nanzhuang Bridge area.
In simple terms: The Old Street tells stories, and the Osmanthus Garden transforms those stories into everyday flavors and objects to take home.

How to Have the Best Time | My Route and Photo Spots
1. Start by warming up in the exhibition hall: Take photos of the shadows of dry branches against the window light, capturing the shelving and woodwork in the same frame.
2. Shop Selection: Choose two lightweight items from osmanthus wine, osmanthus tea, or osmanthus candy. If you enjoy the woody flavor, small wooden signs or coasters are perfect for travel collections.
3. Walk to Nanzhuang Old Street: From the Osmanthus Garden, it's an 8-10 minute walk back to the Old Street. A perfect path connects Osmanthus Alley, Washing Shoes Pit, and the Old Post Office.
4. Suspension Bridge and Waterfront: For a change of scenery, take a stroll to Kangji Suspension Bridge/Waterfront Park. The evening light is the best.

Review (with address!)
• Nanzhuang Osmanthus Garden Country Club | Garden Restaurant
Address: No. 73-7, Neighborhood 5, Nanjiang Village, Nanzhuang Township, Miaoli County (next to Nanzhuang Bridge).
I tried:
• Osmanthus Sparkling Drink: Refreshing and perfectly sweet; the osmanthus fragrance is unmistakable, with a subtle citrus tang, perfect for cooling off.
• Hakka Stir-fried Pork Intestine with Shredded Ginger (optional combo dish): Salty and fragrant, with a sour, appetizing kick; perfect with white rice.
• Osmanthus Dessert: Osmanthus Jelly or Osmanthus Cake are fragrant but not greasy, making them a perfect ending.
Why Recommended: The restaurant incorporates osmanthus into its dishes, not just in the gift cabinet. The spacious courtyard makes dining with elders or children a breeze. Note: Official information states that the restaurant and shop are all centered around osmanthus. Menus and prices are subject to on-site announcements. Closed on Tuesdays.
For a change of pace, return to the Old Street for Hakka rice cakes or osmanthus glutinous rice balls for a snack, which perfectly complements the culinary theme of this trip.

Practical Tips (Avoiding Pitfalls/Photography/Prices) 💡
• Avoid peak hours: Weekends are most crowded from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM; weekday mornings or evenings are the most comfortable.
• Photography: Indoors, use a 45° angle to store goods on a counter, and sideways, backlit by a window for the best layered shots of dried flowers.
• Shopping: Osmanthus wine is fragile, so ask the store clerk to add bubble wrap. If taking a bus, wrap the outer bag with another layer.
• Candles/Incense: The fragrance is highly concentrated, so diffuse briefly upon returning to your B&B to avoid burning it for too long.
• Weather: Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so bring a light jacket; in the summer, a hat is essential for sun protection.
• Budget: Souvenirs + drinks + a meal, NT$300–600 per person (varies depending on purchase; prices are subject to availability).
