Miaoli Atayal Museum, located in the Atayal Indigenous Cultural Industry Park in Tai'an Township, serves as a dedicated space showcasing the history, culture, and lifestyle of the Atayal people in the Miaoli region. This free-entry museum is not only a static repository of knowledge but also offers interactive exhibits that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the wisdom and traditions of the Atayal people. The museum's architectural design cleverly incorporates traditional Atayal elements and motifs, exuding a strong indigenous style. The most iconic motif is the "Eye of the Ancestors" (a diamond pattern), symbolizing the watchful gaze and protection of ancestors in Atayal culture, reminding the community to uphold traditions and ethics. This motif is a recurring theme throughout the museum's interior and exterior design.
The Atayal Museum typically features two floors, each with distinct themes and experiences:
First Floor: Cultural Context and Daily Artifacts
- Tribal Distribution and Migration: Through maps, photos, and texts, this section introduces the distribution and migration history of the Atayal people in the central and northern mountainous regions of Taiwan, with a focus on the development of local tribes in Tai'an Township.
- Seasonal Rituals: Detailed displays of significant traditional Atayal ceremonies, such as the Ancestral Spirit Festival, Sowing Festival, and Harvest Festival, explaining their underlying beliefs and practices.
- Daily Artifacts and Crafts: Exhibits of various tools used in traditional Atayal life, including weaving and clothing, hunting tools, and rattan crafts.
Second Floor: Interactive Experiences and Forest Scenarios
- Forest Experience Zone/Bamboo House Scene: A simulated traditional Atayal bamboo house setting, offering insights into the living environment and spatial layout of the community.
- Firefly Light Show (Starlight Corridor): One of the museum's most talked-about interactive exhibits, using modern light and shadow technology to recreate the enchanting scene of fireflies dancing in the nighttime forest, providing an immersive experience and a perfect photo opportunity.
- Interactive Games and Cultural Core: Multimedia and interactive installations help visitors learn about Atayal facial tattooing (Patas, a symbol of adulthood and honor), the culture of the mouth harp (an important Atayal musical instrument), and more, adding an element of fun to the visit.
Through the Atayal Museum, visitors can transcend time and space to deeply understand the Atayal philosophy of harmonious coexistence with nature and reverence for ancestral spirits. It is an educational and engaging cultural journey, especially for those visiting the Tai'an Hot Spring area in Miaoli.
