Soul of Okinawa - Kokusai Dori, Naha City

Kokusai Dori, also known as International Street, is the vibrant main artery of Naha City, stretching about 1.6 kilometers through the city center. It offers an energetic glimpse into Okinawa’s culture, cuisine, and shopping scene. If you’re visiting Okinawa for just a few days, Kokusai Dori is your one-stop destination for everything from souvenirs, traditional Ryukyu crafts, and shisa statues to modern Okinawan fashion and snacks.

Though only 1.6 kilometers long, the area features charming side alleys like Heiwa Dori and Ichiba Hondori, which offer a more local and nostalgic atmosphere with traditional markets and hidden gems. I recommend setting aside a whole day to fully explore its wonders.

If you’re a Snoopy fan like me, don’t miss Snoopy’s Surf Shop, tucked away in one of Kokusai Dori’s alleys. The shop perfectly blends the laid-back vibes of Okinawa’s beach culture and offers a fun mix of exclusive merchandise featuring Snoopy and friends in beachwear, local-style tees, tote bags, surf gear, and even Okinawa-limited edition collectibles!

While exploring, I also enjoyed some delicious snacks. One of my favorites is Mille Mele, famous for its fresh-baked apple pies. If you’re looking for local Okinawan specialties, there’s no shortage of options, including pork belly (rafute), Okinawa soba, taco rice, beni imo (sweet potato) tarts, and sea salt ice cream. It’s best to come with an empty stomach!

Parking around Kokusai Dori can be challenging, especially during peak hours. While there are many paid parking lots, the closer spots tend to be more expensive. For convenience, I recommend using public transportation — Miebashi Station is just a 5-minute walk from the main street.
