Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku were both traveler's stations during the Edo Period, essential routes for Kyoto princesses on their way to Edo. Magome-juku survived a fire, and the current buildings are a replica of its original appearance. The streets are lined with teahouses and restaurants, and the local snack, gohei-pancakes, is quite unique.
Tsumago-juku is a national tangible cultural property that has survived the Edo Period. It's quaint and quiet, with few residents and few businesses. Yet, for some reason, I loved the atmosphere there. On the day of my visit, there were only two or three small sundries and a small ice cream shop. The sight of tourists wandering through the ancient streets felt like stepping into a time warp.
