Phra Pathom Chedi

Timelessly beautiful...a sky-piercing chedi of the Dvaravati Kingdom.

I haven't been here in over a decade. Phra Pathom Chedi, also known as Phra Thom Chedi, one of the largest and tallest chedis in Thailand, remains unchanged.

The current Phra Pathom Chedi is a Sri Lankan-Sukhothai-style chedi. It's a large, bell-shaped chedi with a massive flaring mouth. Its timber structure is crisscrossed with massive chains, brickwork, and mortar, decorated with tiles. It consists of four wihans and a double-layered wall.

It was built during the reign of King Rama IV, who built it over two original chedis: a Sanchi-style chedi in the Indian style of the time of King Ashoka the Great, and an ancient Khmer-style chedi.

It is believed to enshrine the relics of the Lord Buddha.
