Miyama Kayabuki no Sato (Japanese: 美山かやぶきの里) is a small settlement located in Miyama Town, Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is renowned for its traditional "kayabuki" thatched-roof houses. Alongside Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, Miyama is famous for its well-preserved traditional gassho-style architecture.
Features of Miyama Kayabuki no Sato:
• Unique Architecture:
- "Gassho-style" roofs are shaped like a steep triangle, resembling hands clasped in prayer, designed to withstand heavy snowfall.
- Miyama's houses feature thatched roofs that harmonize beautifully with the seasonal landscapes:
- Spring: Cherry blossoms and ancient houses.
- Summer: Lush greenery and clear waters.
- Autumn: Vibrant autumn leaves complementing the thatched roofs.
- Winter: Snow-covered scenery, evoking a fairytale-like atmosphere.
• History and Preservation:
- Historically, this area has been a rural settlement where residents relied on forestry and agriculture for their livelihood.
- In the 1970s, urbanization led to a decline in traditional architecture, prompting Miyama to be designated as an "Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings."
• Tourist Experiences:
- Visit the lifestyle exhibition hall inside the thatched-roof houses.
- Participate in the "Snow Lantern Corridor" lighting event during winter, creating a magical nighttime view.
- Enjoy local cuisine such as Miyama soba noodles, mountain vegetable dishes, and venison specialties.
• Transportation (from Kyoto city center):
- Take the JR train from Kyoto Station to Hiyoshi Station, then transfer to a bus to Miyama (approximately 2 hours).
- Driving is more convenient, allowing for flexible stops.
📌 Note:
Miyama is less commercialized compared to Shirakawa-go, attracting fewer tourists and maintaining a more rustic atmosphere. If you prefer quiet, slow-paced rural scenery, Miyama offers a more tranquil experience than Shirakawa-go.
