Kitamura in Miyama-cho, Nandan City, may not be a popular attraction that often appears on the cover of travel magazines, but it is in my mind the most recommended choice for Gassho Village. In contrast to the long queues and endless shops in Shirakawa-go, the Miyama-cho Gassho Village quietly guards the traditional face at the foot of Kyoto Mountain - in sunny weather, the blue sky with typical Japanese Gassho House, a feeling of being frozen in time, no need to compete with others for a selfie spot!
A selection of attractions
The first stop is Kitamura, Miyama-cho
The most exciting thing here is the rows of intact Gassho-zukuri houses, with roofs slightly different from Shirakawa-go, with a simpler design that blends into the simplicity of the Kyoto area. The village is surrounded by mountains, and walking on the path in front of the house, surrounded by sometimes leisurely walking cats and dogs, feels particularly healing. Most of the houses are not open exhibition halls, but really have residents, which also makes this Gassho Village more human and less commercial.
Second stop must drink Meishan Real Estate milk
It is recommended to go to the only store in the village (Mishan Milk Stand) and buy a cup of locally produced milk in Meishan. The shopkeeper sometimes takes the initiative to introduce what handmade desserts are nearby. Many tourists say that they come to Meishan because of its milk.
Station 3 Wild and Life Scenery
The biggest selling point of Kitamura in Miyama-cho is that there are not so many hard commercial facilities, so cats and dogs are often seen interacting with villagers in outdoor corners, along the paths. Some of the palm houses have recently been opened by villagers to simply experience agricultural activities (such as farming and picking vegetables), especially suitable for those who want to feel the pure rural life atmosphere.
Practical information
Miyama-cho Kitamura is open year-round and can be visited in any season, with no limited opening hours itself, visitors can freely wander around (but respect the life of the villagers and do not break into the houses or make loud noises).
Address: Miyamachokita, Nantan, Kyoto 601-0712 Japan
Driving is the most convenient option, accessible along Fu Road 38 or Fu Road 12. There is a public parking lot in the village.
Milk Stand: Located in the center of the village, it operates year-round, typically 9am to 5pm.
Tip Essence
To avoid the large crowds of Shirakawa-go, Miyama-cho Kitamura is a better choice, without many tourists, perfect for travelers who want to learn more about the culture of Gassho Village and experience the slow life of Japanese countryside. The joint house has a unique design of the roof, which focuses on snow resistance and durability. When walking into the village, you can slowly appreciate the wiring of each house.
Be sure to try Meishan Real Estate milk, the taste is really unforgettable, after drinking it immediately fall in love with Meishan!
The village has a strong sense of life. Remember to respect the villagers and not make loud noises or take photos inappropriately.
It is recommended to visit in the spring or fall for the most beautiful views, not too hot, sunny days for photos beyond the video.
