Destination: I visited the Heijō Palace Site Historical Park in Nara, the location of ancient Heijō‑kyō, Japan’s capital from 710 to 784 AD. Its highlight is the reconstructed Suzaku Gate and the majestic Daigokuden (Imperial Audience Hall) modeled on Tang‑era architecture. Surrounding these are restored ceremonial halls and the elegant To‑in Garden, complete with pond and stone bridge, all set within the original palace grid.
Rough Budget: Admission to the palace grounds and museums is completely free. With transportation from nearby Kintetsu Yamato‑Saidaiji Station (~¥300‑¥400) and light snacks, total cost remained under ¥1,500.
#1 Travel Tip & Hack: Rent a bike at Saidaiji Station to cover the sprawling 120‑hectare site more efficiently and enjoy pleasant garden scenery. Also, before visiting, download the “Nara Heijō-kyō Historic Walk” app—it unlocks audio commentary and AR features at key ruins.
