Tamukeyama Hachimangu Shrine
Located on the way from Kasuga Taisha Shrine to Todaiji Temple and the Nara Prefectural Office.
Constructed in 749 from Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Oita as the guardian deity of Todaiji Temple, this shrine was built at the time of the construction of the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple.
It is also a famous spot for viewing autumn foliage in Kyoto.
The beauty of the autumn leaves is so evident in the poem "Hyakunin Isshu" by Sugawara no Michizane: "This time, without even offering a sacred offering, I gaze upon the brocade of maple leaves on Mt. Tamuke, at the mercy of the gods."
While it gets very crowded in the fall, spring is a great time to relax and enjoy the lush foliage with fewer worshippers.
