Tamsui Fort San Domingo | A Red Brick Fortress Witnessing 300 Years of History
Reaching a height on the banks of the Tamsui River, Fort San Domingo is one of Tamsui's most iconic landmarks. Its red brick walls gleam a warm orange-red in the sunlight, quietly telling the story of Taiwan's encounter with the world. The fortress was first built in 1629 by the Spanish and later taken over by the Dutch, hence the name "Fort San Domingo." Through British concessions and Japanese rule, Fort San Domingo has witnessed centuries of historical change and remains a remarkably recognizable historical landmark in Tamsui.
Entering Fort San Domingo is like stepping into a time warp. Its thick brick walls, antique window frames, English-style fireplaces, and elegant arches exude a rich colonial charm. Inside, exhibits of period furnishings and diplomatic documents offer a glimpse into the daily lives of foreign consuls in Tamsui in the 19th century. Walking up to the second-floor terrace, you can enjoy a broad view of the Tamsui River and Guanyin Mountain. A gentle breeze blows on your face, and at that moment, time seems to stand still.
