Located in Nikko City, this shrine enshrines Tosho-gu Daigongen, the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, as its main deity.
It is the head shrine of all Tosho-gu shrines in Japan, and is counted as one of the three major Tosho-gu shrines along with Kunozan Tosho-gu and Ueno Tosho-gu.
Founded in 1617 by the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada.
In 1616, his father, Tokugawa Ieyasu, died, and he followed his will, saying, "I will bury my body at Kunozan in Suruga, and after the first anniversary of my death, build a small chapel at Nikkozan in Shimotsuke and enshrine it there."
The current shrine building was built in 1636 by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the architectural decorations, such as the carvings and colors used in Tosho-gu, were made using the highest level of technology at the time.
It is one of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" registered as a World Heritage Site.
