Explored Nikko’s gorgeous nature vibes with a spontaneous autumn detour that absolutely delivered 🍁🌅. Starting from Tokyo, I set off toward Nasu and paused in Nikko for some seasonal magic that’s honestly bucket-list worthy!
Top Spots to Visit in Nikko:
Akechidaira Ropeway: Even if you skip the ride like I did, the view at the base is jaw-dropping in autumn. Think fiery reds and glowing gold everywhere! This area is open daily from 09:00-15:30, and a ride costs ¥290, but you can definitely enjoy the foliage without it during peak season.
Lake Chūzenji (Nikko, Tochigi, Japan): All-day, year-round access means you catch whatever mood strikes, but sunset here is next-level. Bring a camera, grab a spot at the shore and soak up the vibrant colors reflecting off the lake. It’s peaceful and photogenic - a true gem in Nikko.
Pro Tip: If you’re coming from Tokyo, grab a Tobu Rail Pass to save cash and skip ticket lines. Local buses connect Nikko Station to all major sights, so transit is super simple. During autumn, aim to visit mid-late afternoon for best light and thinner crowds. Or you can just rent a car and stop whenever you like.
Food Rec: Try some yuba (tofu skin) at lakeside cafés, or snack on Nikko’s famous “yokan” (sweet bean jelly) from local shops.
Key Tips: Weather is cool in autumn so layer up!
