Founded in 729 AD under the auspices of Empress Kōken and the monk Gyōki. The main hall was reconstructed during the early Edo period after being destroyed by war

frogs symbolizing wealth (holding coins), scholars (with scrolls), longevity, or the safe return of loved ones (“kaeru” meaning both “frog” and “to return”).

The frog motif began when a head priest returned from a trip to China with a frog figurine; over time, the collection grew and evolved into a playful, open atmosphere meant to welcome all visitors. The temple grounds are scattered with approximately 5,000 to 10,000 frog statues—carved from wood, ceramic, jade, stone, and more

From June 1 to September 30, the temple hosts a Wind Chime Festival (Fu-rin Festival). Thousands of delicate wind chimes hang throughout the grounds, creating a serene, melodic ambiance where the chimes harmonize with the surrounding nature.
