Retracing the legend of Phra Nang Phaya at Wat Nang Phaya, Phitsanulok Province

📍Wat Nang Phaya, Phitsanulok Province

🌇 This renowned temple in Phitsanulok, built during the Sukhothai period, is renowned among amulet gurus for its high-class amulets, one of the Benjaphakee set, also known as the "Phra Nang Phaya." The first discovery of the amulet occurred in 1901. The Phra Nang Phaya is widely known for its sacred powers and distinctive charm. It is believed that the name "Wat Nang Phaya" comes from "Phra Wisut Kasat," the consort of King Maha Thammaracha and the mother of Phra Suphan Kanlaya, King Naresuan the Great, and King Ekathotsarot. Evidence indicates that the temple was built while he was the ruler of Songkhwae. During the restoration of Wat Ratchaburana around 1547–1557, he also created the "Phra Nang Phaya" amulet, enshrined in the chedi. According to ancient belief, the temple was abandoned for a long time due to war until excavations uncovered the "Phra Nang Phaya" amulet, which revived its fame. Wat Nang Phaya is located between the renowned Wat Mahathat and Wat Ratchaburana. A captivating gem in Phitsanulok province, this temple's beauty is evident in its exquisite architecture, which blends seamlessly with the surrounding savannah landscape. The highlight of Wat Nang Phaya is the impressive Buddha image known as "Phra Nang Phaya Ruean Kaew," enshrined behind the ordination hall.
