Wat Phnom, a prominent temple, stands atop a mound in the heart of the city and has been a symbol of the founding legend of Phnom Penh since ancient times.

Upon arriving at the temple grounds, the first thing that strikes one is the high mound, lined with shady trees, contrasting with the clear Phnom Penh sky. Climbing the steps to the top feels like stepping into a world far more peaceful than the bustling city center.

Along the way, lion and naga statues guard the steps, signaling your entry into a sacred space. As you approach the top, you'll see a large white pagoda rising above.

Legend has it that Lady Penh discovered four Buddha images floating down the Mekong River and built a temple and stupa to enshrine them. The surrounding city was thus named "Phnom Penh," meaning "Lady Penh's Hill."

Today, Wat Phnom remains a spiritual center for the people of Phnom Penh, particularly during the Cambodian New Year (Chaul Chnam Thmey), when large crowds gather to make merit, pray, and seek blessings for good fortune.
