Wat Thammarat, formerly known as Wat Mukharat, is a former royal temple in the Ayutthaya period. It is located in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, next to the ancient palace and Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
Wat Thammarat was built by Phraya Thammarat, son of King Sai Nam Phueng. Therefore, it is assumed that it was built before the establishment of Ayutthaya. It was originally called Wat Mukharat, but later its name was changed to Wat Thammarat after its creator.
Highlights - Wat Thammarat has an important highlight: it is the temple where the head of Phra Thammarat was found, which is considered to be the largest and most important bronze Buddha head in Thailand.
