When it comes to outstanding ancient sites in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, one must-see is Wat Ratchaburana, an ancient temple located not far from Wat Mahathat in the heart of Ayutthaya Island. It stands out for its large prang chedi, which remains beautiful and historically valuable despite its centuries-old history.
History
Wat Ratchaburana was built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat II (Chao Sam Phraya) around 1424 CE to honor his two elder brothers, who died fighting for the throne at the Thung Phra Meru field. This makes Wat Ratchaburana a temple that reflects both grief and remembrance for the royal family.
Must-See Highlights
• Large prang chedi: Early Ayutthaya architecture, beautifully decorated with stucco patterns, particularly the niches that once housed numerous Buddha images.
• Treasure crypt beneath the prang: Valuable artifacts have been discovered, including golden Buddha images, royal utensils, and ancient amulets. These are currently on display at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum.
• Bird's-eye view: Visitors can climb the stairs inside the prang to the upper level. Enjoy a different perspective on the beautiful Ayutthaya city.
Opening Hours:
• Open daily: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
• Admission: 10 baht for Thais, 50 baht for foreigners
Getting there:
