Vegetarian Festival 🥬 Phuket Vegetarian Festival 67

Beyond the sea and renowned Sino-Portuguese culture, Phuket is also renowned for its vegetarian festival, or Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

Phuket residents enjoy vegetarian food from shrines, or what we call "hiw khap khao." Each household brings a food container to the shrine and brings vegetarian food to eat.

Each day, there is a procession of spirits around the city at each shrine. Spirit mediums present Chinese talismans (Hu), hand-tied sindhu strings (Mo Yong), bracelets, sweets, and various candies to the audience. Ceremonies may also be held for the elderly to bring good fortune and cure illnesses.
