A beautiful site not to miss, Thunder Cave is more than just a viewpoint — it’s a raw encounter with the power of the Southern Ocean. Standing at the lookout, you’ll hear the deep, echoing booms as waves surge into the hollow chamber, creating the “thunder” that gives the cave its name. On wild days, the sound rolls through the cliffs like nature’s own drumbeat, both exhilarating and humbling.

What makes this spot even more fascinating is its story. Around 20 million years ago, this entire coastline was a deep ocean floor. Layers of sand, plants, and marine life compacted over millennia, forming the sandstone and limestone cliffs we see today. Relentless erosion sculpted arches and caves — Thunder Cave being one of its most dramatic results. Originally, an archway framed this site, but when it collapsed, massive chunks of limestone fell into the sea, now lying about 15 metres below the surface. Each crashing wave rolls over these submerged boulders before surging into the cave, amplifying that signature thunderous roar.
