Escape to Paradise: Discovering Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands

Pulau Perhentian gave me one of the most unforgettable island experiences, and the best part—it was incredibly budget-friendly. 🌊
I stayed on Perhentian Kecil, the smaller island, which had a relaxed, backpacker-friendly atmosphere. My accommodation was a simple beach hut with just a fan, but waking up to the soothing sound of waves every morning was absolutely priceless. 🛏🌅
During the day, I joined a group snorkeling trip that cost only around RM40–50. It was an incredible experience—I swam alongside turtles at Turtle Point and even spotted a reef shark 🐢🦈. The vibrant, colorful corals were so mesmerizing that I didn’t feel the need to splurge on an expensive diving package.
As the sun began to set, I would head to Coral Bay to witness breathtaking sunsets—orange skies blending into purple hues, reflected on the tranquil waters. 🌇 Meanwhile, Long Beach came alive at night with affordable BBQ seafood stalls and captivating fire shows right on the sand. I vividly remember sitting cross-legged with new friends from all over the world, sharing travel stories over grilled fish and cheap drinks. 🍻🐟🔥
Another highlight was exploring the jungle trails that connect the bays. One morning, I ventured onto a trail and discovered a secluded beach with hardly anyone around—it felt like my own secret hideaway.
Practical tip: Make sure to bring enough cash 💸, as ATMs are scarce, and don’t expect luxury here. The charm of Pulau Perhentian lies in its simplicity—barefoot walks on the sand, enjoying nasi lemak by the beach, and falling asleep under a sky filled with stars. ✨
