This morning in Sapa, the air is pleasantly cool. A thin mist drapes over the mountaintops like a soft white blanket.
I stand atop Fansipan—the roof of Indochina—at 3,143 meters above sea level.
The golden sunlight slowly casts a soft glow on the wooden terraces and triangular spires of the monument.
It's not just a viewpoint, it's the most heart-pounding spot of the trip.
After descending the summit, I strolled through Cat Cat village.
Small wooden houses lined the mountainside, and the sound of running water from a clear stream cascades through the air.
The smell of roasted corn wafted through the small roadside stalls.
I sipped coffee in a yellow French-style cafe at Sun Plaza.
I watched the red tram slowly pass by like a scene from a European film.
