Visit Hokkaido Shrine, the guardian of Hokkaido's pioneering three deities.

Come and visit Hokkaido Shrine, the largest shrine in Hokkaido. It is located near Maruyama Park Station on the Sapporo Subway. After exiting the station, head towards Maruyama Park, and you will find Hokkaido Shrine on the mountain. The shrine is beautiful in all seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, red leaves in autumn, and white snow in winter.

Hokkaido Shrine has three torii gate entrances. Entering through the first torii gate from the park entrance, you will pass by Kaitaku Shrine, Sapporo Konpira Shrine, and Eda Shrine. Entering through the second torii gate leads directly to the main hall of the shrine along the Omotesando, lined with cherry blossom trees. Entering through the third torii gate, you will pass by the archery range, and you can explore the surrounding area.

Hokkaido Shrine was formerly known as Sapporo Shrine. In 1869, Emperor Meiji ordered the establishment of the shrine in Sapporo to enshrine the three deities who protect the pioneering efforts in Hokkaido. It is considered the guardian shrine of all Hokkaido, so be sure to visit and buy an omamori (protective charm).
