Take the subway to Maruyama Koen Station and walk into the park. The entire park is filled with giant trees. Despite the thick snow, there are still many locals walking or walking their dogs. Artists have created many snow art pieces on the trees, which are very impressive.
Walk to the adjacent Hokkaido Shrine. The solemn shrine covered in white snow adds to its sacred feeling. According to tradition, cleanse your hands at the temizuya, then proceed to the main hall. I happened to witness a family photo session after a wedding, which had a very Japanese touch.
While you're there, stop by Rokkatei to have a Hanagaki Mochi (¥140), and buy a Fukubiki Mochi (¥250) at the shrine's tea house. One is slightly roasted and the other is hot-pressed, both are delicious red bean mochi snacks.
