This isn't my first time in Ikseon-dong, but each visit is different. The newly opened shops and renovated decor always bring a sense of freshness that's irresistible.
I like to visit near dusk, avoiding the tour group crowds and strolling leisurely. The air is no longer as humid, and the air-conditioned air wafting past shops brings a refreshing coolness.
Here are over a hundred old hanok houses dating back to 1920. They were the residential community built by Jeong Se-kwon back then. Each unit was small, solving housing problems. But over the past century, they've become jewelry stores, stationery shops, flower shops, bakeries, cafes, and restaurants. The century-old architecture blends with trendy decor, creating a so-called neo-retro vibe.
In 2018, Ikseon-dong was officially designated a hanok project support area, and along with Bukchon Hanok Village and Insa-dong, it's been given priority protection and restoration. In recent years, it's become a must-see destination for visitors to Seoul, with an increasing number of international tourists. Japanese, Taiwanese, and Southeast Asian tourists are particularly fond of these alleyways embodying the charm of hanok. There are places like Leyuanyi, with its conveyor belt cakes, 아삐뽀레, and Shilladang, which sells traditional Korean desserts. There are many more interesting places you can explore on your own.
📍Address: Ikseon-dong, Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea
🚗Jongno 3-ga Station, Exit 4, a three-minute walk away.
