|The White House on the Sea, admire| the essence of Shanghai style. Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts, located at the intersection of Fenyang Road and Taiyuan Road, is hidden in a large area of greenery.
The architectural style is unique, in the style of the French late Renaissance court. The main building in the middle protrudes, and the eight-character stairs on both sides embrace each other. Because it resembles the White House in the United States, it is known as the "Little White House on the Sea" and is one of the must-visit spots in Shanghai.
The house was originally the residence of the director of the French Concession Public Concession Bureau. After the War of Resistance Against Japan, it served as the Asia-Pacific office of the UN World Health Organization. After the liberation, it was the residence of the Sino-Soviet Friendship Association. In the 1960s, the Institute of Arts and Crafts moved in, and in 2002, the museum and professional studios were established.
In addition to displaying the fine arts and crafts of modern Shanghai, the studios here are also open to the public. Visitors can watch the production process of artworks up close, which is very grounded. Especially when you see the facial sculptures and colored lanterns that were common in childhood, it feels very familiar. It's a pity that the times have developed too fast, and these skills are on the verge of being lost. I hope our folk crafts will have successors.
p.s. Located in the Hengfu Historical Style Area, there are buildings full of historical sense nearby, such as the Shanghai Huju Theatre, the Pushkin Statue, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, which are very suitable for City Walk
