Introduction and Recommendations for Shanghai Gongqing National Forest Park
Overview
Shanghai Gongqing National Forest Park is the only national AAAA-level scenic area in downtown Shanghai featuring forest landscapes. It is located at No. 2000 Jungong Road, Yangpu District, bordered by the Huangpu River to the east and Jungong Road to the west, covering a total area of 1,965 mu, with 1,870.6 mu of open public green space. The park is divided into two parts: the North Park (1,631 mu) focuses on forest wilderness, featuring hills, lakes, and grasslands; the South Park (239.6 mu, also known as "Wanzhu Garden") showcases the Jiangnan garden style with small bridges, flowing water, and serene bamboo groves, presenting southern scenery. The park has over 200 species of trees, totaling more than 300,000 plants, making it a rare "natural oxygen bar" in the city.
Opening Hours
East Gate, South Gate, North Gate, Wanzhu Garden: 5:00 AM - 6:00 PM
West Gate: 5:00 AM - 7:30 PM (after 6:00 PM only the West Gate lawn area is open)
Reasons to Visit
Rich natural scenery: The hills and lakes of the North Park contrast sharply with the bamboo and water features of the South Park. Spring blooms include cherry blossoms and hydrangeas, while autumn features colorful foliage such as red maples, ginkgo, and dawn redwoods, offering beautiful views year-round.
Diverse leisure experiences: Enjoy cycling (tandem bikes at 30 RMB/hour), horseback riding, barbecues, or take the forest train (15 RMB/person) through the woods to experience a fairy-tale atmosphere.
Sports and fitness haven: The park has forest trails suitable for running and hiking, hosts forest cross-country marathons, and nearby FAST Sports Center offers badminton and other activities.
Top choice for family outings: The large lawn is perfect for picnics and tent pitching, with wetland boardwalks and abundant children’s play facilities, making it an ideal weekend relaxation spot for families.
Transportation Guide
Public transport: Green travel is recommended. Take bus routes 102, 124, or 147 directly; or take Metro Line 8 or 10 to Siping Road Station and transfer to bus 147, or from Xiangyin Road Station on Line 8 transfer to bus 102.
Driving tips: Parking around the park is limited and some roads are under construction, so public transport is preferred.
Tips for Visiting
Tickets: 15 RMB per person (7 RMB with student ID). No need to buy sightseeing train tickets; walking or cycling better lets you enjoy the forest wilderness.
Photo tips: Wear Morandi color tones (gray-pink, light purple, etc.) and shoot at spots like the dawn redwood forest, Monet Garden, and sweetgum forest, using a wide-angle lens to highlight the grandeur of the forest.
Notes: Large tables and chairs are prohibited inside the park. Please sort your trash, protect plants and animals, and children under 1.3 meters must be accompanied by a guardian.
Whether for spring outings and flower viewing, sports and fitness, or family leisure, Gongqing National Forest Park lets you find a peaceful moment embracing nature in the city.
