Sandanbeki is a dramatic natural wonder in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, offering two distinct and equally memorable experiences: the cliff-top views and the hidden pirate cave below.
The Cliffs (三段壁): The Viewpoint
The name, meaning "Three-Tiered Cliff," describes the awe-inspiring sight of a 50-meter-high, two-kilometer-long sheer rock wall pounded by the powerful Kuroshio Current (Black Current) of the Pacific Ocean. The sheer size and jagged nature of the cliffs are truly cinematic, making you feel the immense, untamed power of nature. A well-maintained walking path allows visitors to safely view the dramatic coastline. This spot is also famous as a designated "Lover's Sanctuary," complete with heart-shaped monuments and a pink postbox. The clifftop experience is free and highly recommended for photo enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The Cave (三段壁洞窟): The Hidden Treasure
For a small admission fee, an elevator plunges 36 meters down through the rock to a vast sea cave at sea level. This is the real highlight. Legend holds this was a secret hideout for the Kumano Navy (pirates) during the Heian period. Inside, you can explore a 200-meter course featuring a replica guardhouse, a small shrine dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, and fascinating geological formations. The most exciting part is the observation area where you can hear and feel the deafening roar of the ocean as waves crash directly into the cave walls, often shooting sea spray up through a blowhole.
Verdict
Sandanbeki is a magnificent destination. While the view from the top is spectacular, paying the fee for the cave elevator is a worthwhile investment to fully appreciate the area's geological and historical drama. Plan for about an hour to explore both the clifftop and the cave. The sheer scale and historical aura make it a top-tier attraction in the Shirahama region.
