Shirahama Sandanbeki, Japan
The Shirahama area in Wakayama is not only blessed by pandas, but also has natural beauty along the coast, such as Sandanbeki and Engetsu Island, which are so beautiful that people can't help but linger. The second time I came to Shirahama, I returned to Sandanbeki just to see the sunset that I missed last time. However, in addition to the beautiful sunset at Sandanbeki, there is actually a "Sandanbeki Cave" under the Sandanbeki, which allows tourists to take an elevator to the center of the earth to explore.
Sandanbeki is a popular tourist attraction in Shirahama. In fact, Sandanbeki does not mean three sections as we understand it literally, but means "looking at the broken wall". In the past, there was a "surveillance tower" specially set up here to "monitor the fish schools", which was called "Midan". The pronunciation of "Midan" in Japanese is exactly the same as "Midan", which evolved into Sandanbeki. When you come here, in order to explore the Three Cliffs, in addition to being able to overlook the beautiful cliff scenery from the observation deck on land, there is also a 12-story elevator built here, allowing travelers to take the elevator deep into the earth and reach the caves below the broken arm, close to the sea.
The Sandanbeki is part of the Kumano National Park and is a famous scenic spot in Shirahama and a sacred place for lovers.
Japanese people like to compare broken walls to folding screens, such as the Eight Views of Muroran in Hokkaido. These screens are like a line of defense protruding from the sea. The walls are 50 to 60 meters high and stretch about two kilometers from north to south. Each one is very majestic.
Although it was a sunny day, the sea breeze was still very strong. When a huge wave suddenly hit, it was so majestic that the sound and vision were quite shocking, but it also made me feel terrified. It is said that during typhoons the waves here will hit the cliffs, and the highest wave has been observed to be over 60 meters high. Thinking of the scene of huge waves, one can marvel at the power of nature.
Take the elevator to the Sandanbeki Cave. The cave is 36 meters above the ground, and it only takes 14 seconds to reach the site by elevator.
In the past, Samdangbi was a refuge for fishermen sailing nearby to avoid pirates. Pirates used to run rampant here, and in order to avoid being attacked by pirates, the kind fishermen would hide in this cave whenever they encountered pirates. During the Heian period, the cave became a water stronghold of the "Kumano Navy", and soldiers and warships skilled in water warfare were stationed in the tunnel.
When the external waves rushed into the cave from outside, the huge waves stirred up by the violent impact unfolded before your eyes, full of tension and quite shocking.
If the season and weather permit, you can enjoy the beautiful sunset outside the cave from the cave close to the sea.
The caves have accumulated many mineral elements, giving them colors such as red, brown and yellow. The tour guide specifically reminded us not to let our clothes get stained with these waters because they would be impossible to wash off.
There are also many natural landscapes in the natural sea caves. If you follow the official signs, you will see the "Tideblowing Cave" (the water column in the picture) where water will spray out on the wall. This is a water spray phenomenon caused by the tidal impact.
