Don't regret not visiting Nagoya.

You always hear about Shirakawago in winter—the fairy tale village buried under snow—but visiting in summer? It’s a whole different kind of magic, and honestly, I’m still not over it.
Picture this: bright green rice fields stretching out under a wide blue sky, with the iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses standing proudly like guardians of another era. Their steep thatched roofs (built to withstand heavy snow) look almost playful against the sunny, endless green of summer. Every path feels like it’s leading you deeper into a Studio Ghibli movie.
I wandered through narrow lanes, past vegetable gardens buzzing with bees, and crystal-clear streams reflecting the sunlight. The sound of the river, the scent of fresh-cut grass, and the sight of colorful hydrangeas blooming around the houses—it all slowed me down, in the best way.
Locals tended their gardens, kids rode bicycles down the lanes, and every so often, a breeze would carry the scent of fresh earth and wildflowers. I grabbed a matcha soft serve from a tiny shop and just sat near the river, letting the village’s slow heartbeat sync with mine.
If you’re dreaming of a place where you can breathe deep, unplug, and feel connected to nature and history at the same time—Shirakawago in summer is pure soul food.
