Just two hours drive from Nagoya, you can experience old Japan. Shirakawa-go is an UNESCO heritage site with its traditional gassho-zukuri thatched roof houses. The village can be explored on foot and you can complete it within two hours. The Wada House is biggest, a National Treasure, where you can explore the indoor of the these rural Japanese houses.
In afternoon, head over to Takayama and explore the Edo-period Sanmachi Suji old town with its merchant houses where you can have sake tasting and traditional Japanese snacks. While at it, get the miso paste from one of the shops along the old street.
Tip: You may head to Takayama first if you want to explore the morning markets. But, we find it more worthwhile doing Shirakawa while it is not so hot in the morning.
