Besides the familiar Gassho-style houses, Shirakawa-go also boasts Shirakawa-Hachiman Shrine and Myozen-ji Temple, both well worth visiting.
Shirakawa-Hachiman Shrine is located in the World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go Gassho Village. Originally built in the 7th century during the Wadō period, it has undergone numerous relocations and reconstructions, remaining a venerable shrine within the Shirakawa-go area. It enshrines Emperor Ojin, revered by the villagers.
Myozen-ji Temple, a 270-year-old Gassho-style temple, is a rare example of a Gassho-style temple in Japan. The existing buildings date back to the early 19th century, and the monks' kuri (curtain) has been transformed into a museum, with a local museum open to visitors. Myozen-ji Temple's bell tower, built in 1801, features a thatched roof and bell, making it a temple of great historical value.
