If you're visiting Shizuoka, make sure to explore Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and don't miss the experience of riding the cable car at Nihondaira. Not only is this the most convenient route to the shrine, but Nihondaira itself is also a noteworthy attraction.
Let's start with the Nihondaira Dream Terrace, a public space designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and opened in 2018. The structure extensively uses Shizuoka wood, and staff explain that its design was inspired by the Yumedono Hall of Horyuji Temple. This influence is evident in the frequent use of octagonal shapes throughout the design, from the main building to the extended wooden walkway viewing area and the outer observation deck.
If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji from the Dream Terrace. Even if only the summit is visible, the view of Suruga Bay and Miho no Matsubara below creates a unique experience. Despite the heat, the terrace is located at a breezy spot overlooking Suruga Bay, making it quite comfortable.
The cable car ride is also fascinating. The cabins are styled to resemble Tokugawa Ieyasu's palanquin, and to keep you cool, fans are provided inside. This journey from Nihondaira to Kunozan offers another perspective of Suruga Bay's beauty.
