Compared to some of the more famous and heavily commercialized water towns near Suzhou and Shanghai, Mudu Ancient Town (木渎古镇) retains a more peaceful and leisurely atmosphere. Visiting during weekdays, or even early mornings, allows for a more authentic and serene experience, often described as a "hidden gem."
As you stroll the cobblestone streets and cross the ancient stone bridges, you get a genuine glimpse into old China. The environment is less about tourist trinkets and more about local life. The waterways (the Xiangxi and Xujiang rivers) and the well-preserved traditional architecture create a relaxed pace that invites visitors to slow down, explore the quiet alleys, and savor the local cuisine and tea houses.
