With a history stretching back over 2,500 years, Mudu Ancient Town (木渎古镇) is as old as Suzhou itself and is steeped in historical and cultural significance. It was famously the preferred destination for Emperor Qianlong on his southern inspection tours, and his frequent visits left a legacy of imperial-grade residences and gardens.
This rich background provides a unique atmosphere of historical depth. Attractions like the Bangyan Mansion (the residence of a high-ranking imperial scholar) and the story behind the town's name (which translates to "wood blocking the port," linked to the construction of a palace for the legendary beauty Xi Shi) add fascinating layers to the environment, allowing visitors to appreciate the town’s role as a major cultural and commercial hub in ancient times.
