Tainan Grand Mazu Temple is located in a small alley diagonally opposite Chihkan Tower. Originally known as Dongning Tianfei Temple, it was established during the Ming Zheng period and later converted from the Ningjing Prince's residence. This temple is the earliest official Mazu temple in Taiwan, featuring historical plaques, artifacts, stone carvings, wooden decorations, and other artistic elements. The temple is divided into four main sections: the Main Hall, Rear Hall, Sanchuan Hall, and Worship Hall, collectively referred to as the "Four Progressions." The Main Hall enshrines a golden-faced statue of Mazu, accompanied by her loyal attendants, Thousand-Mile Eye and Wind-Following Ear. The Rear Hall is dedicated to the Matchmaker God, where many young men and women pray for help in finding their ideal partners.
Other highlights of the temple include the Immortal Offering Peach painting, Tiger Creek Three Laughs painting, and calligraphy by Chen Songnian in the Main Hall; the Dharma Theft painting in the Grand Hall; the dragon pillars and dragon-tiger wall in the Sanchuan Hall; and the dragon pillars, Han Fan statue, platform inscription stele, and Four Elders of Shangshan painting in the Worship Hall. The Rear Hall features the Mulan Joins the Army painting. Hidden within these artifacts are numerous "Easter eggs" waiting for visitors to carefully observe and uncover their mysteries.
