Recommendations for feeding the carp at Ritsurin Garden

Ritsurin Garden

This garden, spanning an area equivalent to 16 Tokyo Domes, features six ponds and 13 artificial hills.

Completed over a period of approximately 100 years by successive lords of the Sanuki Takamatsu Domain during the Edo period, it is now designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

It is also one of Japan's most representative feudal lord gardens, earning the highest three-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

Just inside the garden is Satsukitei, a teahouse nestled near the Umebayashi Bridge on Lake Kitako.

Carp food is sold here for 100 yen.
It's similar to dried gluten and provides balanced nutrition for carp.

There's quite a lot, but there are carp in six ponds other than the Umebayashi Bridge, so be sure to feed them in multiple locations.

Feeding is suspended during the winter, from December to May of the following year.
The drop in pond water temperature is said to cause the carp to suffer from indigestion.
