Ready for an epic Thailand road trip? Here’s my 3D2N self-drive adventure from Penang to Phuket and Tha Muang—perfect if you crave culture, freedom, and some wow-moment temples 🚗🌴
Top Spots to Visit:
Phuket: Wat Wichit Sangkaram
Address: 1 Narisson Rd, Tambon Talat Yai, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket 83000, Thailand
A serene, less-touristy spot with gorgeous architecture— perfect for photos and quiet reflection, white temple is rare in South Thailand, a preview before you visit Chiangmai.
One of the largest and most beautiful temples in Phuket. Its main ubosot (ordination hall) is painted white with striking details, which is why some tourists nickname it the “white temple of Phuket.”
Park nearby, wear something modest, and expect a warm local vibe.
Tha Muang: Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple)
Address: XJ34+H36, Muang Chum, Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi 71110, Thailand
Opening hours: 08:00–17:00
Famous for epic stair climbs and panoramic views.
This is a famous temple in Krabi (not Phuket), about 3 hours away.
Known for its long staircase (1,200+ steps) leading to a golden Buddha on the mountain top, with amazing views.
Get there early to beat the heat and avoid crowds! Don’t forget comfy shoes. There’s free parking around the site.
Travel Tips I Loved:
The self-drive route is super flexible—make sure your international license is sorted, and stock up on snacks + drinks before you cross into Thailand. Google Maps is your best friend for navigation. Gas stations are frequent, and roadside food is cheap & yum!
Getting Around:
Driving lets you set your own pace. Roads were easy to manage if you’re comfortable with left-side driving. Always keep some cash (THB) handy for quick stops and tolls.
Eats:
Phuket’s seafood stalls by the beaches are a must-try. Near Wat Tham Suea, look for small local restaurants serving pad thai and fresh fruit smoothies—cheap and delish!
Pro Tips:
Weather’s hot and humid year-round—light clothes, sunscreen, and a hat are lifesavers. Respect temple dress codes: cover shoulders/knees. Visa-on-arrival for Malaysians is fuss-free.
