📍Address: Imperial Palace Gaien, Tokyo
Walking around the Imperial Palace, which is surrounded by modern business districts, gives you a feeling of time warping. Japanese architect Shohei Shigematsu describes the buildings and facilities in the Tokyo Imperial Palace and surrounding areas as feeling like a parallel universe of Tokyo. ⭐️🥰
They are neither natural features nor parks or monuments, and although they resemble infrastructure, they are clearly not buildings. They are such vaguely defined entities.
The Imperial Palace was originally Edo Castle, where the Tokugawa Shogun lived during the Japanese shogunate era. After Emperor Meiji ascended the throne, he moved here from Kyoto and renamed Edo to Tokyo. 🔥
There are several gates built in the Edo period throughout the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens. Among them, Sakurada Gate, built in 1612, is the largest gate in the existing Edo Castle ruins. ☺️
Japanese gardens are praised for their exquisite details. The clean gravel ground, the perfectly trimmed pine trees (there are about 2,000 pine trees in the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens), and the neatly stacked stones make it very comfortable to sit on the bench under the pine trees and rest when you are tired.
Due to its good environment and proximity to workplaces, the area near the Imperial Palace is known as the most popular jogging spot in Tokyo. 😳😎
