KITTE Marunouchi offers a shopping experience akin to visiting an art gallery, while preserving the architectural style of the former Tokyo Central Post Office.

🔧🛠️⚒️🏢KITTE's design, especially the Tokyo KITTE, was handled by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Based on the original appearance of the old Tokyo Central Post Office building, it was transformed into a mixed-use commercial facility combining nostalgia and innovation.

🏢The interior design utilizes a large amount of wood, brick, and other building materials, and a triangular atrium was carved into the pure white building to bring in natural light, giving the old building new life.

🏢Key Design Points of Tokyo #kitteMarunouchi KITTE

🏣Preservation of the Old Building: Based on the old Tokyo Central Post Office building completed in 1931 and designed by Tetsuro Yoshida, its exterior was preserved and integrated with the newly built JP Tower.

Interior Space and Building Materials: Designed by Kengo Kuma, it uses Japanese building materials such as wood, brick, and washi paper to create a nostalgic yet fashionable atmosphere.

🏢Unique Atrium: A triangular, illuminated atrium within the building brings light into the interior, making the space feel more spacious and comfortable.

Nostalgia and Innovation: Combining the meaning of "kitte" (postage stamp) with the pronunciation of "kite" (come), the building showcases modern creativity within a retro exterior, while retaining the spirit of a post office and offering themed floors and merchandise.

KITTE Hakata Design

Exterior Design: The checkered glass curtain wall and louvered panels, inspired by Hakata weaving, present different styles over time.

Pedestrian Flow: The circulation design on the first and second floors, through single-frame structures and curved louvered ceilings, creates an open and expressive space, guiding pedestrian flow from the station to the surrounding area.

🏛️🏢🏫Mitsubishi Museum of Art, Building I, 2-6-2100-0005, Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo

The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum of Art opened in Tokyo in 2010.

The current building is a restoration of the original Mitsubishi Ichigokan building as much as possible.

The building itself was designed by British architect Josiah Kant in 1894 and was the first Western-style office building in the Marunouchi area. It housed the Mitsubishi headquarters at the time and was demolished in 1968 due to its age.

Currently, the museum holds three special exhibitions annually, primarily focusing on modern art from the late 19th to the early 20th century, as depicted in the Mitsubishi Ichigokan.

Located in the Marunouchi area, home to many fine restaurants and brand-name shops, the museum also features an elegant café/bar and a museum shop.

Facing the museum entrance is an English-style garden, planted with approximately 40 varieties of roses, primarily the traditional roses published in 1894.

Although the crowds were constant,

the staff were all very nice, unlike what I've seen online about stores in Ginza!

And there's a highlight here:

You can take photos of Tokyo Station across the street from the transparent glass windows 🪟
