If there's one small town in the Kansai region that has captured my heart, it's Uji. This charming town is a paradise for matcha lovers like me. Every corner is filled with the rich aroma of green tea, and we made it our mission to try everything matcha-flavored.
Our Itinerary
12:00 PM - Ujibashi Bridge
We started our journey at Ujibashi Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in Japan. The view of the Uji River was breathtaking, and the calm atmosphere set the perfect tone for the day. Uji is just about an hour from Nara, making it an easy and worthwhile trip.
12:30 PM - Byōdō-in Omotesando (Lunch & Matcha Tasting)
Walking along Byōdō-in Omotesando, the famous shopping street leading to Byōdō-in Temple, was an absolute delight. This is where our matcha feast began! We tried everything with matcha—matcha soba, matcha mochi, matcha ice cream, and even matcha beer! Every bite was a dream come true for a green tea addict.
2:30 PM - Byōdō-in Temple
After indulging in matcha heaven, we visited Byōdō-in Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Phoenix Hall looked even more stunning in person, reflecting beautifully over the pond. We took a peaceful stroll around the temple grounds, appreciating its historical charm.
3:30 PM - Tachibana Island
To end our day, we walked to Tachibana Island, a small island on the Uji River. It was the perfect place to relax before heading back to Uji Station. The sound of the flowing river and the scenic view made it a serene way to conclude our trip.
Uji is truly a matcha paradise. From traditional tea houses to matcha-infused delicacies, every moment here was an experience worth savoring. If you love matcha as much as I do, this small town should definitely be on your travel list!
